BROAD BAND LIGHT (BBL)

Like IPL on Steroids

Beauty Bar Medispa is the only provider of the BroadBand Light (BBL) Therapy by Sciton® in eastern North Carolina. We’re dedicated to bringing our clients the latest skincare and beauty technology.

Over time the skin starts to expose pigmentation, facial veins, wrinkles, and overall dullness due to the natural aging process, sun exposure, pollution and many other factors. With BroadBand Light Therapy by Sciton®, you don’t have to be stuck with those age spots, brown spots or that uneven skin texture. BBL helps to soften or erase the appearance of damage which can ultimately take years off your complexion as well as simply help you become more confident in your skin.

BBL stands for BroadBand Light and is like IPL on steroids (see comparison below – Comparing BBL to IPL).

BBL hand pieces are equipped with state-of-the-art cooling features. This innovation enables the use of high-powered energy while causing only minimal pain, side effects and post-treatment downtime. It also has a range of settings that puts more control into the hands of the practitioner.

BBL was designed to target imperfections where they begin, below the surface of the skin. It helps correct a wide range of skin concerns including:

  • sun damage
  • irregular skin texture
  • acne and acne scarring
  • age spots
  • birthmarks
  • fine lines
  • freckles
  • rosacea
  • sagging skin
  • visible, broken blood vessels beneath the skin

The light energy delivered by Broad Band Light (BBL) will gently heat the upper layers of your skin. The heat absorbed by the targeted areas will stimulate your skin cells to regenerate new collagen. This restores your skin to its natural beauty, blending its natural colors and making it smoother, vibrant and younger looking. In addition, the photothermal energy will eliminate fine vessels that cause redness and will reduce unwanted melanin that produces pigmented lesions.

The benefits to Sciton BBL treatment are proven in scientific studies. A Stanford University study reveals that treatments with BBL can alter the expression of genes associated with aging. In fact, after treatment, cells more closely resemble the cells of younger skin. BBL can treat pigment issues such as:

  • freckles and age spots
  • vascular lesions such as those pesky bloody vessels
  • acne lesions
  • unwanted hair
  • uneven skin texture/tone

What Will the Broad Band Light (BBL) Treatment be Like?

Patients report that their skin starts to feel smoother, pores are less noticeable, and uneven pigmentation has started to fade after even just one BBL treatment. The BBL treatment is most commonly done on the face, neck, chest, hands and arms. If you have issues in other areas, a consult with one of our providers can determine if it is an eligible area as well. A lot of people ask about the discomfort of the BBL. It is best explained by referring to the sensation as a “rubber band-like” snap. The machine is also equipped with advanced cooling features. This allows the use of high-powered energy with minimal discomfort. Your doctor can adjust the settings of the BBL to attack and address the exact issues that are causing you concerns. By working with one of our providers, you can have a peace of mind that your treatment will be done safely. It will be within the parameters that are specific to your skin type, skin issues and skin history.

What to expect after your BBL?

Directly after your BBL, you may experience some redness and the skin may feel as if you have a slight sunburn. The redness should resolve within a few hours. Depending on how aggressive your treatment is and how you personally respond, you may also see some moderate swelling. Do not be alarmed, this is normal and won’t hang around for too long. In the days after your BBL, in spots you may see a darkening of the treated areas followed by fading and flaking off at a later stage. This is good news, the darkness and flaking is your skin getting rid of the pigment and means your treatment is working!

With little recovery time and no surgery, BBL offers a safe, FDA-cleared option for sun damage, anti-aging, and skin rejuvenation that will leave you looking refreshed and feeling more confident.

Comparing BBL to IPL

IPL is better suited for precisely treating a very targeted area while BBL is often better for treating a broader skin range. Many skin care professionals agree that BBL is the gold standard of photofacial skin rejuvenation. Largely seen as the safer option, BBL can treat sun spots, age spots, spider veins, active acne, hyperpigmentation, rosacea, birthmarks, and more, all while being non invasive and requiring no downtime. Creating a change at a molecular level is what sets BBL apart from IPL.

BBL and IPL have a significant difference, but also some basic similarities:

  • Both use non-invasive light waves to rejuvenate skin
  • Both treat skin on any area of the body. Skin that has been exposed to the damaging effects of sunlight – face, neck, back of the hands, chest, and shoulders – can be helped with BBL and IPL
  • The number of treatments required for maximum benefit varies from patient to patient. A skincare professional will customise a multi-session treatment plan and possibly combine your treatment with other aesthetic treatments to enhance the results
  • The duration of benefits from a series of BBL and IPL skin rejuvenation treatments can last anywhere from six to twelve months, depending on a specific patient’s issues

BBL treatments use a range of light waves to target the hemoglobin and melanin in skin. IPL laser treatment works to stimulate collagen to reduce visible signs of skin ageing, sun spots, hyperpigmentation and enlarged pores. Additionally, IPL works to stimulate collagen, which, in turn, erases fine lines and mild acne scarring.
